Areas of Expertise

My Services

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 13 years of clinical experience working with diverse range of problems across settings such as hospital outpatient clinics, inpatient and intensive outpatient programs, and university counseling centers. I provide treatment to adults and adolescents for a range of issues including adjustment to life stressors, relationship issues, other problems in daily living as well as more serious clinical problems such as disorders related to mood, anxiety, trauma, and personality. I have expertise in treating anxiety disorders such as panic disorder and agoraphobia, phobias, health anxiety, social anxiety as well as obsessive compulsive and related disorders (OCRD) using evidence-based approaches such as exposure and response prevention (ERP). I also have advanced training in cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for trauma and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) which is effective for treating life-threatening, impulsive, self-destructive behaviors, and problems with emotion regulation. Effective assessment and treatment of self-injury and suicidality has been part of my research and clinical work. I also provide couples therapy based on the Gottman method and cognitive behavioral principles.

At the beginning of therapy, I conduct a comprehensive assessment, and tailor the treatment to the client’s individual needs while keeping it rooted in the best standards of care. I incorporate mindfulness-based strategies and motivational interviewing in the treatment, as needed. I believe that creating a non-judgmental space and building a connection is important for the therapy to be helpful. Therapy is ultimately directed at creating a life worth living and finding the path to that. Human beings are very resilient and with help in getting unstuck from their problems, they can return to their full potential. I have had the privilege of helping several clients return to full functioning in their work, social, and personal lives.

As an immigrant from India, I have a special interest in providing services to individuals identifying as South-Asian, Indian, and first-generation or second-generation immigrants. I believe that receiving culturally-sensitive care can lead to feeling understood and accepted as it provides a safe space to process experiences unique to the cultural context. Often in South Asian cultures, there is stigma related to mental health difficulties which makes it more difficult to understand mental health struggles and to ascertain when one should seek help. I offer a one-time consultation that can help answer questions and determine need for further assessment or intervention.

If interested, please contact me for a brief consultation so we can assess whether we could work well together.

My Journey

I received my Master’s in clinical psychology from Mumbai University and have experience working at schools, community health centers, state and government hospitals in India. I then moved to the US and graduated with PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Wyoming; completed a one-year predoctoral internship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Boston University’s world-renowned Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders. Most recently, I worked for over 5 years at UMASS Memorial Medical Center providing individual and group therapy and helping people with a wide range of difficulties. I have conducted research related to non-suicidal self-injury and suicidality, borderline personality disorder, and anxiety. I have collaborated with researchers at UMASS Chan Medical School and led an NIH-funded research project on suicide prevention in healthcare systems based on the Zero Suicide framework. I am currently in private practice at Cambridge Psychology Group and also serve as Instructor in Psychiatry at UMASS Chan Medical School, providing didactic education to psychiatry residents.
